Not many people outside of México know what is celebrated on 5 de Mayo. Some of our non-hispanic friends believe it's the day of the Mexican independence, which is actually celebrated on September 16; which commemorates the day when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church, and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican war of Independence. Cinco de Mayo, is an annual celebration in remembrance of an unlikely victory of the poorly equipped Mexican people and army against the almighty invading army of the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
